February Mini Shoot Promo

Tis the season when shooting has slowed to a manageable pace and I am finally catching/finishing up on last season’s edit work. I’ve got a bit left, but there’s definitely a light at the end of the tunnel. So, as life slows down just a bit I finally have time to run a promo that I’ve been wanting to for some time. The February Mini Shoot – designed around the idea that life is always more fun with more than one person. $50 for a two people, be it a couple or just friends.

Lucky You

One of the cooler parts of this gig is the variety of life I run into while working. Such was the case last night while doing some recon for a promo shoot with Luck You we’ll be shooting next week. The guys played an incredibly energetic set in front of hundreds of screaming drinkers, at times having to share the stage with upwards of 20 stunning women at the same time; tis the rough life of a rocker I guess.

Anyway…it was a great show and it was perfect for seeing this band in their natural element. Should be a great shoot next week.

Back To Work – Seniors

It’s been a bit since I’ve had a chance to post images from the ‘work’ side of shooting. This time of year the blog always suffers while I try to keep my head above water. Here’s a few from the last couple of months from some of the high school students I work with. I have another post with more seniors coming ASAP, as well as weddings and ‘everything else’ in the not too distant future.

BriggsFest ’11 – Day One

Wooooooo! Day 1 of BriggsFest ’11 is in the bag. Like always, a generally awesome time was had by tons of people.

The rain helped keep everyone cool and looking forward to today’s perfect weather! If you’ve never made it to Briggs before, or just couldn’t make it out last night, today should be one for the ages!

It’s “Take The Family To Work Day”!

As often as possible we try to keep our little crew of ladies with us…if we can take them on a job, we do it. They’ve had some crazy cool experiences and we’re pretty sure that’s a good thing! For sure it can add to the logistics and whatnot that go into planning a shoot, particularly a location shoot with a few hours of driving in between, but it’s totally worth it. I’m hoping they learn something about the balance between work and play…and perhaps realize that if you can make your play your work, you’re doing pretty well…

This past weekend we cruised down to Ocean City, Maryland to do some family portraits. We put in the time Sunday evening and Monday morning getting what we needed for ‘work’, then took some time to hang out and enjoy a little of what going to the beach has to offer. Watching Jazzy & Nora playing tag with the surf will never get old; and when the weather turned a little south we ran inside to do some underwater shooting in the hotel pool. I love documenting the girls being girls…it’s what being a parent is all about!

…Jazzy also wanted me to make sure I mentioned that they were catching jellyfish too. Sadly, I don’t think I got any shots of them as they were doing this while I was working with the family we were there to shoot. Regardless, I can confirm that she actually did catch some…and yes, I think she’s crazy!

Recent Wedding Work

As is normally the case, when the busy seasons hit I find it hard to keep the blog updated. I think about it constantly, but never seem to have time to work it in…someday I’ll figure out the right mix.

Here’s a few from some of the weddings we were fortunate enough to shoot this spring…had a blast at each one; as much work as they are, I really do enjoy shooting weddings. Thank you to all the couples who asked us to help make their day amazing!

The Love – A Short Story

For the first couple of days here in Minnesota I had a chance to catch up with a guy I graduated high school with back in ’93. Hanging with Donny and his wife Heidi gave me a great opportunity to try my hand at another short story done in still frame. I called in Megan, a model I worked with my last time here in MN, to be our villain and we spent a few hours having a great time telling this story. Everyone did a killer job doing what we needed to get this done. I gotta raise a morning beer to each of them for their efforts, ideas, hospitality and friendship! Thanks guys!

Short Story Stills – New Blog Section

I’m spending a week in Minnesota clearing my head and preparing for life in the busy season back home in Pennsylvania. It’s a great place to sit back and refocus (photo pun #1) on where I want to go with my photography. It gives me the chance to review what I’m doing through a new lens (#2) of clarity. So, I thought it would be a nice opportunity to shoot (#3) some new project stuff up on the blog.

The ‘Short Story Stills’ section is something I’ve been working on for a few weeks now. Each entry is a new series of images that I’m using to stretch myself creatively, both behind the camera and from a production/direction perspective. In 20 images or less I’m trying to tell stories that have a beginning, middle and end. And everything is fair game; they can be complex, sexy, funny, adventurous…you name it…if the story can be thought out effectively, I’m going to try to shoot it.

Here’s a few stills from the first three shoots in the series. Each idea is a collaboration. The basic concepts for each shoot are planned out ahead of time, but are also completely malleable during execution. Everyone has a voice; photographer, models, makeup artists and any production assistants we have on hand…the more input, the better chance we have of making something awesome.

Gotta tip the hat to Chantel, Beth & Casey for being on the business side of the lens for these first sets. A major thank you to Daniel Oz and Chelsea for the backside production on shoot’s two and three…and of course Connie for helping make these ideas realities LONG before I ever pick up a camera. With all sincerity, everyone of you have been crucial to the success of these shoots and I appreciate your help in a way I’ll never be able to explain.

Shooting With Stesha

When Chris Bishop agreed to do a custom graffiti job for the studio he asked If I would mind letting his roommate Stesha follow me around on a shoot. Fair trade, I thought (NOT, I owe him MUCH more!). But I wanted to make it more useful to her than just having her watch me work. Seriously, it’s boring…It’s when I’m not working that the fun happens. She told me she was into shooting stuff with movement…namely, skaters. So we gathered up a few willing early risers and had a little shoot-a-round to work on some cool images and to learn a few things while we were at it. These are out of my camera, but make sure to check out Stesha’s shots as well. She was ON today!

We had a blast and I’m sure she walked away more confident and ready to really rock her friends out with a camera. And props to Chris and Eli for getting up early and being patient while we worked out the technical stuff. Thanks guys! (Chris, as soon as I can find your page, I’ll link this to you…thanks man!)
